  28. The installation procedure for FoneFile is quite simple.  The package 
  29. includes a program, "INSTALL.EXE", which automates the entire process.
  30. You will need about 500kb of available disk space on the hard drive on 
  31. which you plan to install FoneFile.
  32.  
  33. The exact steps you need to take will depend on how you received the 
  34. FoneFile package.
  35.

  37. .r INSTALLING FROM DISKETTES 
  38.  
  39. To install from diskette(s), you need to perform the following steps.
  40.  
  41.    o  Place FoneFile distribution diskette "Disk 1" in the
  42.       appropriate diskette drive.
  43.  
  44.    o  Execute the "INSTALL.EXE" program on the distribution diskette.
  45.       For example, if the distribution diskette is on drive A:, type
  46.       the MS-DOS command, "a:install".
  47.  
  48.    o  Follow the instructions presented by the installation program.
  49.       You will have a chance to approve installation before any changes
  50.       are actually made to the contents of your hard drive.  The
  51.       program will ask you for a destination directory, and will copy
  52.       the FoneFile files to that directory.  If you so direct it, 
  53.       the installation program will install executable programs and
  54.       documentation in other directories of your choice.  It will make
  55.       no other changes; specifically, it will not modify your 
  56.       autoexec.bat or config.sys files.

  59. .r INSTALLING FROM A HARD DRIVE 
  60.  
  61. If you downloaded FoneFile from a BBS (or received it in the form of
  62. archive files from some other source), you will need to perform the
  63. following steps.
  64.  
  65.    o  Extract the contents of the archive file(s) in a temporary
  66.       directory on your hard drive.  The procedure for doing this
  67.       varies, depending on the form in which you received the package.
  68.       In all likelihood, the fact that you are reading this text means
  69.       that you already have the necessary tools and knowledge to
  70.       perform this step.  If not, you should be able to obtain
  71.       directions for this from the same source from which you received
  72.       the package.

  74.    o  Execute the "INSTALL.EXE" program which you have extracted.  For
  75.       example, if the temporary directory into which you have extracted
  76.       the <product> package is C:\TEMPDIR, you would execute the MS-DOS
  77.       command, "c:\tempdir\install".
  78.  
  79.    o  Follow the instructions presented by the installation program.
  80.       You will have a chance to approve installation before any changes
  81.       are actually made to the contents of your hard drive.  The
  82.       program will ask you for a destination directory, and will copy
  83.       the FoneFile files to that directory.  If you so direct it, the
  84.       installation program will install executable programs and

  89. When you're satisfied that the installation was successful, you should
  90. delete the temporary directory FROM which you installed FoneFile
  91. (C:\TEMPDIR, in the above discussion), including all its contents.

  94. YOU'RE READY TO GO
  95.  
  96. Once you've complete the installation you can type FONEFILE from the DOS
  97. prompt to load the main program into memory.  See the rest of this document
  98. for special features and other information you need to properly evaluate 
  99. FoneFile.  We hope you enjoy the program.

  102. .i Special Network Considerations:  Please read the special instructions    
  103. .i at the end of this document if you are performing a network installation

  110. The installation program will allow you to set some configuration options.
  111. You can also change these options by pressing <F10> from the main FoneFile
  112. summary display screen, or clicking the RIGHT mouse button.
  113. Most of the options will be self explanatory, but there are a few that you
  114. should pay special attention to:
  115.  
  116.    1. The Hot-Key:      This is the key used to 'pop-up' FoneFile once
  117.                         it is loaded into memory.  By default, the hot-key
  118.                         is <ALT>+T.  You can change this to any combination
  119.                         of the <Ctrl>, <Alt>, or <Ctrl> AND <Alt> key and
  120.                         any other ALPHABETIC key (A-Z)
  121.  
  122.                         Some combination of keys can cause unexpected
  123.                         results.  For example, <CTRL>+S usually pauses the
  124.                         PC's display.  If you choose a HotKey that produces
  125.                         undesirably results, reboot your computer and start
  126.                         FoneFile with the /DEFAULT switch.  ie, type:
  127.                         FONEFILE /DEFAULT  This tells the program to bypass
  128.                         all user defined options and allows you to re-enter
  129.                         them through the configuration menu.
  130.  
  131.    2. Use EMS:          FoneFile is a large program, but despite its size,
  132.                         it only takes 6k of conventional memory.  When
  133.                         the program is loaded into memory, it needs to 
  134.                         'swap' the main portion of its code to either 
  135.                         expanded memory, or to the disk.  Using expanded
  136.                         (EMS) memory will yield the best performance.  If
  137.                         your PC has expanded memory, we highly suggest that 
  138.                         you allow FoneFile to swap its code to EMS rather 
  139.                         than disk. (See note below about the swap location)
  140.  
  141.    3. Default Values:   There are 4 fields that you can pre-define to make
  142.                         data entry a bit faster.  These fields are:     
  143.                         - The City Name
  144.                         - The State
  145.                         - The Zip Code, and
  146.                         - The Telephone Area Code.
  147.                         During data entry, if any of these fields contain
  148.                         data, that data is displayed and the operator can
  149.                         simply press the <Enter> key to accept that value.

  152. .i Other features: 
  153.  
  154. You can start FoneFile without using the TSR option by using the command 
  155. line switch /NOTSR:  For Example, type FONEFILE /NOTSR.  Other command line 
  156. switches allow you to define other behaviors of the program.  Type:
  157. FONEFILE /? for a list of options.
  158.  
  159. If you should get an error (unlikely) FoneFile will abort and return you to
  160. DOS.  The flag that FoneFile uses to see if it is already installed
  161. will still be set, so you must clear the flag before FoneFile will allow 
  162. you to re-install it.  To do so, type:  FONEFILE /CLEAR
  163.  
  164. If FoneFile needs to swap to the hard drive, it will create a hidden, read-
  165. only file on your drive.  You can specify the directory location for this 
  166. file by using the DOS SET command to create an environment variable, FFSWAP.
  167. For example, to have FoneFile use the directory  C:\TEMP you can place the
  168. command:  SET FFSWAP=C:\TEMP in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.  If FoneFile does
  169. not find this variable, it will look for a simple TEMP= variable.  If this
  170. does not exist, FoneFile will create the file in your FONEFILE directory,
  171. where the program FONEFILE.EXE resides.

  179. The installation program needs to create an administrative subdirectory
  180. and optionally a sample directory.  In order for the install program
  181. to do this, you must be logged into the network with an account that 
  182. has sufficient rights.  It is recommended that you use a SUPERVISOR
  183. account to install FoneFile.
  184.  
  185. Once the program and files are copied to the network drive, you will
  186. have the option of setting up a default configuration.  Please refer to
  187. the User Guild for a complete description of each option.
  188.

  190. .i │ Private vs. Shared files │

  193.    The installation program will create a subdirectory in the main FoneFile
  194. directory called "SHARED".  Any file created in this directory is available
  195. to all users. Records can be added, viewed, and deleted from these files by
  196. all persons on the network.
  197.      As each person enters the CONFIGURATION menu, and SAVES a personal
  198. options selection, a new directory is created for that person based on their
  199. LOGIN name.  Private files can now be created in these directories, and will
  200. be hidden from all other users. (The one exception to this is the SUPERVISOR
  201. login name.  Supervisor equivalency will NOT have access to the private
  202. files.)  It is important that each login name be no longer than 12 
  203. characters log in order to assure proper naming conventions for these private
  204. directories.

  212. Due to the very nature of TSR (Terminate and Stay Resident) programs, 
  213. FONEFILE will not work with most GRAPHIC based programs, programs that
  214. control the standard keyboard routines, and a few other programs that
  215. do not conform 100% to all DOS rules.  A few program conflicts that have
  216. been reported are:  
  217.        
  218.      o  DOSSHELL                   (Microsoft  - Can cause PC to lock up)
  219.      o  The Norton Utilities v7.0  (Symantec   - Can reboot the PC)
  220.      o  GeoWorks Ensamble          (Graphics incompatibility)
  221.  
  222. If you have any troubles with FONEFILE in any other programs, please
